In 2011, Ian Chambers and John Humble published Developing A Plan for the Planet: A Business Plan for Sustainable Living. Below is a continuation of the summary of Part I: Understanding our current situation.

Lessons to be learned from the collapse of the Easter Island civilization
The lessons we can learn from the collapse of the Easter Island civilization are: A lack of understanding of the impact of interconnectivity; We need to anticipate the impact of population growth and resource usage; Limited resources need to be managed to avoid conflict; Planning ahead on a global scale is required; Avoid complacency; We need to look openly and honestly at the challenges that we are currently facing; Cooperatively build and share solutions to these challenges and; Put a business-planning approach together that can enable us to tackle these issues in a coordinated and global manner. For the last of these we have drawn on the experience of global business practice in building this global planning approach.

Moving from being part of the problem to part of the solution
Leveraging the skills, knowledge and capabilities of business are essential if we are to succeed in tackling the global challenges. Two of the most important capabilities which can be quickly harnessed are wealth creation and innovation. In addition ‘Best Practice Management Approaches’ that led to companies achieving their objectives and becoming global players are available to use to use to address the challenges we face. The global management business-planning approach is used to develop the framework for a global Plan for the Planet, as well as each agent of change – government, business and people. The exciting prospect is that everyone, whether in business, in government or as a consumer, can get involved in tackling the challenges being faced on Planet Earth and contribute to their solutions. We can all move from being part of the problem to part of the solution.
